3.   Info: Website launch: Rethinking Creativity, Recognition and Indigenous Heritage

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Spanish-English bilingual website, „Rethinking Creativity, Recognition and Indigenous Heritage,“<https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/boliviamusicip/home.aspx> a work of public scholarship (largely relating to music) that we hope you will find interesting, informative, and useful in your research and teaching.

*      What happens when cultures come under regimes of intellectual property and/or heritage registration programs?

*      What happens when these already entangled questions take centre stage in a country like Bolivia, where much of the population might be identified as indigenous?

The conundrums of cultural and intellectual property rights, especially when intersecting with indigenous rights, continue to puzzle scholars and policy makers around the world. These dilemmas were central to the dialogues of Coroico 2012<https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/boliviamusicip/alta-pienglish/theworkshop-coroico2012/home.aspx>, a workshop we organized in Bolivia and whose methodologies and conversations are detailed in this website.  In addition to reading about these dialogues, we encourage you to download, modify, and reuse the materials<https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/boliviamusicip/alta-pienglish/resources/home.aspx> we designed and structured for use in Coroico 2012, particularly the agenda, case studies, and related glossary. We share these materials in the hope that they will spark more conversations, local debates, and necessarily distinct responses to these dilemmas.

Best wishes,

Henry Stobart (Royal Holloway University of London)

Michelle Bigenho (Colgate University)

Conference venue:   City Museum of Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Conference dates:    25/27, August, 2016

Presentation:        After recognition of the Study Group by the Executive Board in July 2015, this first symposium aims to provide a scholarly venue to reflect widely on the use of audiovisual media as a tool of research, communication, preservation and sustainability in ethnomusicology. The symposium will gather international scholars interested in the multifarious implications of the topic.  The themes are chosen to prompt a broad discussion of theoretical and methodological issues, to focus on the more specific topic of the role of audiovisual archives, and to allow for participants to present outcomes of their current research.

1.      Theories and Methods in Audiovisual Ethnomusicology

2.      Uses of Audiovisual Archives in Ethnomusicological Research

3.      New Research

The duration of presentations should be 20 minutes, allowing 10 more minutes for discussion. The use of audiovisual materials is encouraged in every presentation.

The Symposium will be integrated into the yearly festival Nights in the Old Ljubljana Town, so that symposium participants will have the opportunity to screen their films to the general public.
